Math Classes for the LMC Major

Love it or hate it, everyone has to take math to get a Bachelor’s degree! For LMC majors, you actually have two different options to satisfy the core math requirement:

Option A: MATH 1551, 1552, & 1553

  • Commonly referred to as the “calculus sequence”
  • Students in Architecture, Computing, Engineering, and Sciences take this sequence and higher levels of math
  • AP/IB scores may earn you MATH 1551 and/or 1552 credit (more info on AP/IB equivalents here)

Option B: MATH 1711 & 1712

  • Commonly referred to as the “non-calculus option”
  • Students in Ivan Allen College can take this sequence to satisfy the math requirement
  • MATH 1711 = Finite Math and MATH 1712 = Survey of Calculus
  • More common option taken by LMC majors

How Do I Decide Which Math to Take?

  • If you are 100% certain you will stick with LMC as your major (or one of the other IAC majors: ECON, INTA, PUBP, ALIS, HTS, etc.) then you may want to take MATH 1711 & 1712
  • If you are considering other major options or a minor with one of the other colleges then you may want to select the calculus sequence
  • You can still choose to take MATH 1711 & 1712 if you’d rather not continue the calculus sequence (any AP, IB credit, previously taken 15xx classes can move to free electives)

Tips & Tricks for Math as an LMC Major

  • Just because one sequence is a lower number than the other doesn’t mean it’s “easier”
  • MATH 1711 & 1712 are not a sequence so you don’t have to take them in order or back-to-back
  • You cannot mix and match 15xx and 17xx math classes to satisfy your core requirement
  • Math classes tend to have major restrictions, permits, and waitlists during registration – visit their page for more info:
